Men Who Look Great Do Skincare!
In this post, we take a look at how men's skin differs from - and how it ages differently - to women's. We will also look at which men in the public eye take care of their skin.
When men talk about staying healthy they tend to focus on fitness and diet. Rarely is skincare mentioned. Considering the fact that our skin is our largest organ and protects us daily against a myriad of invaders, men rarely consider it. When men do talk about skincare, it tends to be about facial hair, the caring of it and shaving it, to the exclusion of everything else.
So, what's different about men's skin?
Men naturally have more collagen and elastin than women, which makes their skin firmer and thicker overall. In fact, men's skin is typically 25% thicker than women's. Research indicates that men's skin also tends to be less acidic than women's.
Men's skin tends to have larger pores that can clog easily, making a regular cleansing routine very important.
It is best to use a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type, which is typically more oily than women's due to having high levels of the androgen hormone levels. As men age and their testosterone levels drop, their skin tends to become drier and they will have to change their cleansing products accordingly.
How does men's skin age?
When signs of ageing begins to appear in men's skin, it tends to appear around the eyes with dark circles, bags and wrinkles.
An important consideration for all men is that men over 50 are at the highest risk of developing melanoma, and so the most important thing that men (of all ages) can do for their skin is to wear sunscreen.
Which men take skincare seriously?
At 46 years old, Pharell's skin looks incredible which he attributes in part to using only cold water to wash his face. Why, you ask? Because that's what Naomi Cambell does, apparently!
Always looking sharp and fresh, David admits to helping himself to Victoria's skincare. He's also a big believer in the power of a nap.
Rob never leaves home without his serum which he applies throughout the day. It's no wonder he looks this good at 51!
Now that we have introduced men's skin, how it differs from women's, and addressed some of the most important considerations for men's skincare, next we will look at identifying our skin type to help us better select our skincare.

What is my skin type?
You don't experience any breakouts. Your skin doesn’t tend to react negatively to new products or weather changes. You don’t feel like you need to constantly moisturize or blot oil from your face all day long. Your skin is firm, with minimal fine lines and wrinkles.
Your skin always seems to be shining. You’re likely no stranger to blotting sheets or mattifying powders.
caused by a lack of oil in the skin with symptoms including flakiness, sensitivity, itchiness and cracks.
Your skin may feel tight, have a papery appearance or show small, fine lines when your skin is pinched together.
If you’re having trouble figuring out what type of skin you have, it’s likely combination. Is your skin dry in certain areas, while oily in others? Combination skin is most easily defined by an oily T-zone (the strip across the forehead and the line down the nose) and dry or normal skin on the rest of the face.
If you get frequent breakouts (or ones that just never seem to go away), you likely have acne-prone skin. This means that your pores tend to clog easily, making you more susceptible to whiteheads, blackheads or pustules than other skin types. You can have oily or dry skin and be prone to acne.
Your skin may go easily red (flushes), you may experience frequent rashes and bumps, stinging or burning after using a skincare product or have a negative reaction to fragrance and patches of dry, flaky, irritated skin.
You might notice a wrinkle here and there or more dryness than in your younger years. For more mature skin, you may notice sagging, dark spots, dullness and dehydration.
Once you have determined your skin type, you are in a better position to choose skincare products that are right for you.
